West Bengal Power Development Corp plans expansion of Bakreswar Thermal project Phase III extension unit VI with (1 x 500 MW) unit. Around 180 Ha land is available out of which 38 Ha is earmarked for Unit-6 implementation. Coal linkages is assured from Pachwara North coalfields from Coal India Ltd. Water clearance is available, while chimney clearance is yet to be received.
As of Feburary 2018, environmental clearance has been received. The project cost is estimated at Rs. 43500 million.
