VIPL, a subsidiary of Reliance Power Limited, belongs to Reliance Group promoted by Mr.Anil D Ambani group is engaged in developing a domestic coal based project with a capacity of 600 MW at Butibori Industrial Area at Nagpur in the state of Maharashtra. The project was awarded to erstwhile Reliance Energy Limited (currently R-Infra) in 2005 (which was subsequently transferred to R-Power) as GCPP by MIDC on competitive bidding basis. Initially, the scope of the project involved developing a 1X 300 MW power plant, however, subsequently, the company decided to change the scope of the project by doubling its size to 2 X 300 MW.

Also, with concerns over coal availability, VIPL decided to operate the entire project as IPP and has signed a PPA with Reliance Infrastructure Ltd (R-Infra) for contracted capacity of 600 MW for supply of power from April 01, 2014 onwards, out of which it has obtained in – principle approval from MERC for 300 MW (Unit II) while the approval for the balance capacity (Unit I) remains pending as VIPL has recently obtained NOC from MIDC for changing the status of Unit I from GCPP to IPP.

The Boiler, Turbine and Generator (BTG) which are main plant equipment for the power plant are being sourced from Shanghai Electric Corporation, China.
