Ministry of Power to increase transmission capacity in South

Union Ministry of Power is planning to increase transmission capacity in the southern region to 18,000 MW by 2019-20. The transmission capacity in South India by 71 per cent in the last 18 months. In the next two years, it will add another 80 per cent of this capacity. The southern region has often suffered from inadequate transmission capacity, leading to power supply problems, with the result that merchant power tariffs in the region have been significantly higher than the rest of India.

The surplus situation arising out of weak finances of electric distribution companies is being addressed through Ujwal Discom Assurance Yojana (UDAY).
